During the summer of June 1976, Ballery V. Skipper, a recent graduate of Benedict College in Columbia, SC returned home to Conway, SC and initiated the idea of forming a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in the Horry County area.

Understanding the importance of fulfilling their vows to be of “service to all mankind,” Feena Blain Gaiter, Genar Flowers Faulk, Carolyn Hickman, Christina Hill Rhue, Lula Floyd, Vonnie Charleston Gore, Margaret Singleton Weathers, Perita Bryant, Yolanda Randolph, along with Ballery Skipper, enthusiastically met as a group in September 1976. This small nucleus of committed sisters began the diligent work towards the goal of chartering a chapter in the area.

With the help of our sister chapter, Epsilon Chi Omega of Florence, South Carolina, we were able to initiate five (5) prospective candidates making it possible for the chartering of Mu Iota Omega Chapter.

The South Atlantic Regional Director, Norma Soloman White, conducted the chartering of Mu Iota Omega Chapter on Thursday, June 22, 1978, at the office of Dr. James E. Lee, a local African-American Dentist, in Conway, S.C. The following were initiated: Marjorie McIver, Shirley Butler, Lucille Frierson, Linda Galloway, and Brenda Galloway.

The group of energetic women embarked upon a journey to provide and promote activities that
enhanced the educational, cultural, political and social well being of our children and community members under the leadership of Mu Iota Omega Chapter’s initial officers: President, Carolyn A. Hickman; Vice President, Marjorie McIver; Recording Secretary, Linda Galloway; Corresponding Secretary, Christina Rhue; Treasurer, Genar F. Faulk, Parliamentarian, Lula Floyd; and Chapter Hostess, Lucille Frierson.

The first group initiated by Mu Iota Omega Chapter included: Flossie S. Barr, Jeanette A. Faulk, Barbara B. Jackson, Fannie Watson and Linda F. Wright. This Initiation was held May 12, 1979 at Smith- Jones Recreation Center.
